Pairwork Assignment: Drama TV (Raya Aidilfitri)

Peace be upon you.

Here is the assignment given which requires the theme to be Raya Aidilfitri. My partner, Anyssa and I has been brainstorming to produce a good script for a telemovie during Raya. Here it goes. Please enjoy the script.

SCRIPT TANPA KASIH AIDILFITRI

FADE IN.

1.  INT. HOSPITAL. NOON.

LARA, 19, tall and mature-looking, is walking into a ward with a plastic bag full of fruits. KHALID, 49, skinny, is laying on the hospital bed, coughing heavily while a NURSE is taking Khalid’s blood from his arm.

LARA

(cheerful)

Ayah… Lara belikan buah untuk Ayah! Ayah sihat harini? Malam tadi tidur okay tak?

Nurse is cleaning Khalid’s arm and walks out of the room. Lara kisses Khalid’s hands and his cheeks.

                               AYAH   

(coughing)

Ayah rasa sama je tapi… itulah ayah asyik termimpi…

LARA

Ayah… ni kali ke-berapa dah ayah asyik mimpi dia. Almost hari-hari Ayah sebut nama dia. Lara dah tak nak dengar nama dia.

AYAH

(sad)

Takde laa… I was thinking, kita kan dah nak puasa, Ayah ni sakit macam tak baik baik je… Mungkin raya tahun ni, kita dapat raya dengan Mama? Whatever happens, she is still your mother. Apa-apa bila Ayah dah takde, senang la Mama ada untuk Lara dan Tiara.

LARA

It’s okay Ayah, we still have Wan and Ayah pun ada your two beautiful daughters with you sampai bila-bila.

WAN, grandmother, 70, walks into the room with TIARA, 15, cheerful-looking, and hugs Khalid.

WAN

Assalamualaikum… anak Mak cinta hati payung intan, sihat hari ni?

ABAH

(coughing heavily)

Waalaikumsalam… mak. Macam biasa je Mak. Tiara, how was your test today?

TIARA

Hehe… okay je. Eh tadi kan ada Doctor nak ngorat Wan. Lepas tu, Wan jual mahal.

LARA

Uish… hot stuff la Wan ni. Jangan main-main.

WAN

Hey you alls, kita dah tua ni pun ada orang ngorat. Kita kena la jual mahal jangan laa terus cair… Duhh… Kamu dua ni… tengok… boyfriend pun tak ada. Lara ni pun dah alang-alang dekat sini pergi laa cuci mata ke ngorat mana-mana Doctor ke Nurse lelaki ke… mesti ada yang umur kamu. Wan dulu, setiap bulan ada boyfriend baru, belikan Wan macam-macam…

Khalid stares awkwardly to Wan.

WAN

Hehe sebelum jumpa bapak kamu la…

DOCTOR comes into the room with nurses.

DOCTOR

Hello. Afternoon. I would like to do a quick check-up?

KHALID

Doctor, is there any updates?

Doctor is checking Khalid’s breathing and blood pressure.

DOCTOR

The test results came out. We have seen your blood tests and x-ray. There is some improvement, but it is still in bad condition. But it’s good that you have some improvements. Do continue with the medication and treatments.

Doctor walks out of the room, and Tiara, Lara, and Wan comes closer to Khalid’s bed.

KHALID

Berminggu dah dekat sini… sama je keadaan…

WAN

Okay lah tu Khalid, daripada keadaan kamu menurun…

TIARA

Betul apa Wan cakap. Let’s focus on the good side.

LARA

Tapi kita tak boleh tutup yang buruk. Kena focus jugak dekat bahagian yang perlu diperbaiki.

WAN

Ya Lara… sambil sambilan boleh buat dua-dua kan. Baik buruk dua-dua kita kena jaga-jaga. Hm okay lah Wan nak balik sat nak solat mandi, bawakkan Wan boleh? Waktu melawat pun dah nak habis dah. Ni Tiara pun tak mandi lagi ni balik sekolah, eww masyam lagi.

LARA

Okay Wan. Wan turun dulu dengan Tiara. Nanti Lara turun.

WAN

Balik dulu Khalid. Petang karang Mak dengan deme ni datang balik ye.

Wan and Tiara kisses Khalid goodbye and walks out of the room.

KHALID

Lara… Abah betul-betul teringin nak jumpa Mama lagi. Please, Lara je yang boleh tolong Abah.

LARA

(sigh)

…okay. I’ll try okay, Abah? Lara akan cuba.

KHALID

Thank you sayang Abah.

Lara hugs Khalid and goes out of the room.

CUT TO:

2.  INT. HOME. EVENING.

Lara, Tiara and Wan enters home to the living room. Lara puts her phone on the coffee-table with the car keys and her purse. Tiara sees a text message from Lara’s BOYFRIEND.

INSERT TEXT: “Okay baby mucuk…”

Tiara giggles and Lara takes her phone away. Tiara walks up the stairs to her room while laughing.

LARA

Tiara mandi cepat sikit tau nanti terus buat homework.

TIARA

(giggles)

Okay baby mucuk!

Lara rolls her eyes with an annoyed expression.

WAN

Lara ada boyfriend eh?

LARA

…manada Wan. Ish.

WAN

Alah bukannya Wan akan bagitahu Abah kamu pun. Rahsia kita-kita je, gossip gegirls.

LARA

Hehe dia baik sangat, Wan. Kadang-kadang rasa nak kahwin sekarang jugak.

WAN

Ish kamu ni. Have fun laa dulu… time muda-muda ni muka cantik kulit tak kedut lagi. Ramai minat kan. Tutup mata pilih je.

LARA

Ish Wan ni. Hmm… tapi kan Wan. Nak tanya sesuatu, pasal Mama Lara dulu…

WAN

Eh haa… dah nak habis waktu solat kan. Wan nak solat dulu sekejap.

Wan walks fast and goes upstairs.

LARA

Eh… Wan. Ish Wan ni…

CUT TO:

3.  INT. HOSPITAL. EVENING.

Lara, Tiara and Wan enters Khalid’s room. They see a tray full of food that looks untouched on the table in front of Khalid.

LARA

Abah… makanan ni tak luak pun. Abah makan ke tak?

Khalid shakes his head.

WAN

Laa… kenapa tak makan?

KHALID

(speaks softly under his breath)

Tak larat, tak ada selera.

WAN

Meh sini Mak suapkan. Makan sikit pun jadi lah nak. Lara tolong tolakkan meja ni dekat sikit dengan Wan. Tiara tolong basuhkan sudu garfu ni.

Lara helps move the table and Tiara helps wash the cutleries.

Tiara hands it to Wan and Wan takes it from Tiara and feeds Khalid the food from the tray. Khalid opens his mouth and chews slowly.

After three bites, Khalid shakes his head.

KHALID

(softly under his breath)

Tak larat. Tak nak dah.

LARA

Abah minum sikit eh?

Lara gives Khalid a bottle of water.

TIARA

Nak jugak, nak jugak bagi.

Lara hands over the bottle of water to Tiara.

CUT TO:

4.  INT. HOSPITAL. NIGHT.

Wan is reciting the Quran in her praying clothes next to Khalid. Tiara and Lara is asleep on the sofa.

Khalid coughs heavily non-stop.

WAN

Khalid, nak Mak panggil Nurse ke?

Khalid keeps on coughing and nods his head to answer Wan’s question.

WAN

(cont)

Lara, panggilkan Nurse jap.

Nurse and Lara walks into the room.

LARA

Ayah saya batuk dari tadi tak henti. Pagi tadi okay je cuma sekarang tiba-tiba teruk.

Nurse helps Khalid and checks his heartbeat.

NURSE

Sekejap ya, saya panggil Doctor.

Nurse #1 walks fastly out the room and comes back with the Doctor and another NURSE #2.

DOCTOR

Nurse, get me a…

Khalid’s condition deteriorates and the heart monitor beeps loudly.

Doctor gets Khalid on a life support that gets oxygen from Khalid’s mouth and nose.

DOCTOR

Sekarang keadaan dia stabil, nanti kalau ada apa-apa lagi berlaku, panggil saja Nurse.

WAN

Terima kasih Doctor.

Doctor and Nurses go out of the room.

WAN

Lara, Tiara, doakan Abah. Selawat, mengucap dekat sebelah Abah.

Lara and Tiara sit next to Khalid and starts whispering the khalimah syahadah and selawat. Wan starts to recite the Quran.

The heart monitor beeps loudly again.

Lara, Tiara and Wan start crying and recites the khalimah syahadah. Khalid breathes heavily and passes away.

CUT TO:

5.  INT. DINING ROOM. NIGHT.

INSERT: AZAN.

INSERT: 1 WEEK LATER…

Lara is carrying a pot of rice from the kitchen and puts in on the table.

WAN

Azan dah… Lara meh duduk. Tiara, baca doa eh.

Tiara recites the prayer for iftar and everyone starts eating.

LARA

Lara mimpi Ayah lagi malam semalam.

TIARA

Abah sebut nama Mama lagi ke?

Lara nods her head while she eats.

TIARA

Wan… boleh ke kalau Tiara nak pergi lawatan sambil belajar dekat Singapore dengan satu kelas dan cikgu.

WAN

Hm… bukan tak boleh tapi…

LARA

…Tapi Tiara boleh je pergi. Tak apa.

WAN

Lara… mana nak dapat duitnya. Mahal tu Singapore.

LARA

Lara boleh dapat kerja la. Sekejap je. Ada cable la Wan.

WAN

Hm yelah. Sekejap lagi ni tolong Wan kemas bilik Abah kamu.

CUT TO:

6.  INT. BEDROOM. NIGHT.

Lara, Wan and Tiara are sitting on the floor and Wan is sitting on the bed, clearing Khalid’s old stuff and cleaning his bedroom.

WAN

Lara… dah dah la tu cakap dengan boyfriend. Tolong ni sekejap. Kejap lagi sambung sembang dengan dia.

LARA

Okay okay sorry Wan…

Lara goes to the bed to take the sheets and pillowcases out. She feels something different from inside of the pillowcase. She takes her hand into the pillowcase and finds a picture of her mother, MARIA, wearing a flight-attendant outfit with her name hand-written on it with the love symbol.

Lara takes it out and hides it under her shirt.

LARA

Lara nak pergi toilet jap sakit perut.

CUT TO:

7.  INT. LARA’S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

Lara enters her room and hides the picture in her files. She goes out of the room.

CUT TO:

8.  INT. LIVING ROOM. MORNING.

LARA

Morning Wan. Tiara dah pergi sekolah dah eh? Lara nak keluar ni masuk kerja.

WAN

Eh semalam baru cakap nak cari, hari ini dah dapat? Wow manyak hebat ah cable lu. Kerja apa?

LARA

Ni haa kerja dekat kedai kopi. Wan boleh google nama dia Coffee Bean Leaf & Co. Kalau Wan nak kopi, Wan pesan je dekat Lara.

WAN

Haa okaylah. Baik-baik hati-hati bawak kereta. Kamu tengok kiri kanan baca bismillah selawat dulu sebelum keluar rumah, sebelum masuk kereta, sebelum mula enjin, sebelum…

Lara enters her car and stars the engine.

LARA

Ye okay Wan. Wan pun sama. Wan tengok kiri kanan baca bismillah selawat dulu sebelum masuk dapur, sebelum potong bawang, sebelum bukak api, sebelum… Bye!!!

Lara reverses her car and drives off.

9.  INT. AIRPORT. MORNING.

Lara is wearing her coffee shop’s t-shirt and holding Maria’s picture in her hands.

MONTAGE

She goes from one counter to another, in and out of stores, to find her mother.

PILOT

Excuse me, sorry, did you just say… you’re looking for Maria Zaharah binti Kadir? May I see that picture?

Lara looks at this pilot and his nametag that says ‘RAYMOND’

LARA

Yes… sure but sorry may I know who you are?

PILOT

I’m her husband… you are?

LARA

I’m… nobody.

Lara takes the picture and runs away.

10.         INT. IN THE CAR. AFTERNOON.

Lara parks her car in front of Tiara’s high-school.

Tiara enters the car.

LARA

(monologue)

Oh mana budak masam ni… Patut aku bagitahu dia ke tak eh apa jadi tadi? Hmm… patut ke tak…

TIARA

Eh? Rajinnya kakak ambil Tiara hari ni.

LARA

Saja je, sebab baru balik kerja. Tapi nanti akak cerita pasal tu. Kakak nak cerita ni, tapi jangan bagitahu Wan.

TIARA

Apa?

LARA

Kakak jumpa gambar Mama dalam uniform kerja dia. Dulu dia pramugari. Ye laa… selama ni kita tahu nama penuh dia je dari surat beranak tapi selebihnya tak tahu. Pagi tadi kakak cari dia tak jumpa. Cuma…

TIARA

Wow… I thought you didn’t want to see her.

LARA

I was just thinking of Abah. I’m doing this for him and for you. Kakak tak nak kita beraya without both parents. At least ada satu. Walaupun Wan pun dah mencukupi tapi tak nak la Wan sedih tengok kita. Nanti orang nak raya, Wan nak nangis. Dah jadi macam drama malam raya nangis nangis. Kita ni daripada happy dapat makan, terus sedih tak ada selera.

TIARA

Hm betul jugak. So… kakak google nama Mama, dapat apa?

LARA

(in shock)

Oh… my… God… kenapa aku bodoh sangat?! Aku patut google dulu nama dia lepas tu baru keluar pergi cari! Tapi sebenarnya…

TIARA

-Tak apa, kakak tak ada lah bodoh sangat. Dia just sikit je, cikit.

LARA

Eh ko ni… dah turun gi masuk rumah mandi. Budak sekolah masam.

Tiara giggles, opens and shuts the car door and walks into the house.

LARA

(monologue)

Nanti-nanti je la aku bagitahu dia…

11.         INT. BEDROOM. NIGHT.

Lara is laying on her bed, typing on her phone, searching Maria’s name and old occupation on the internet with the pilot’s name, RAYMOND.

Lara finds a picture of Raymond next to Maria, a CEO of a company. Her eyes are wide open as she stares into the phone.

12.         INT. AIRPORT. MORNING

Lara goes to the counter of information to ask and seek for Raymond.

MONTAGE

Lara waits for Raymond at the nearest chair, she walks around the area, as she looks bored.

Lara sees Raymond walking and she approaches him.

LARA

Hello, sorry I don’t think you remember me but…

RAYMOND

I do remember you. You ran away from me yesterday.

LARA

I would like to apologize for that. Are you free at the moment? Could we grab a cup of coffee and talk? You mentioned yesterday that you are Maria Zaharah’s husband. I am Lara, her daughter.

Raymond looks shock and confused. Raymond nods his head and walks with Lara.

CUT TO:

13.         INT. COFFEE SHOP. NOON.

There’s a birth certificate on their table, two cups of coffee, half-drank and a half-eaten bread.

LARA

I hope you understand my part of the story…

RAYMOND

Yes I fully understand. I’m sorry for your lost by the way and I would like to help you. Here is her office and our home address if you need to mail anything. Don’t mention my name okay.

CUT TO:

14.         INT. LOBBY COMPANY. MORNING.

Lara approaches the front desk and asks to seek for an appointment with Maria.

Lara goes into the lift and to Maria’s office with her files and pictures. She sits down on a sofa in front of Maria’s office.

15.         INT. OFFICE. MORNING.

SECRETARY invites Lara in.

MARIA

Yes, how may I help you? Lara?

LARA

You know me?

MARIA

Just by the name you registered for an appointment with me. Can you introduce yourself?

LARA

My name is Lara Katrina binti Khalid. I am your daughter.

Maria is in shock. She stares into Lara.

MARIA

W… Would you like a cup of tea? Coffee?

LARA

Did you hear what I said?

MARIA

Yes I did. Did you hear what I said? Coffee or tea?

LARA

…tea.

MARIA

Please do sit down, have some tea and I will be right back.

Maria goes out of the office and shuts the door.

Maria and her secretary enters the office. The secretary packs Maria’s files and hands Maria her briefcase.

MARIA

I am so sorry Lara. I have to go now for a meeting. The empire doesn’t run itself. Maybe we could continue this for another time, okay? Thank you for coming.

Maria goes out of the office. The secretary stands next to the door and waits for Lara to leave.

Lara goes out of the office, with a face of disappointment and holding back her tears.

CUT TO:

16.         EXT. GUARD HOUSE. DAWN.

It’s almost dark and raining. Lara waits on the edge of the sidewalk next to the guard house.

Maria’s car stops next to her as Maria is waiting for the guard to open up the gates. Lara stares at her through the car windows.

Maria ignores her and drives in.

Lara sits down again at the same spot and hugs herself.

The rain is pouring more heavily.

Maria walks towards her under an umbrella and invites her into her house.

CUT TO:

17.         INT. MARIA’S LIVING ROOM. NIGHT.

Maria goes to the kitchen and comes back to the living room and gives Lara a few medicine, a towel and a pair of fresh folded clothes.

MARIA

Dekat depan tu ada toilet, ada hot shower. Mandi air panas and pakai baju ni dulu. Nanti I masukkan baju you dalam dryer.

LARA

Thank you…

Lara nods her head and goes into the bathroom.

CUT TO:

18.         INT. DINING AREA. NIGHT.

She comes back with a towel on her head and sits down in front of Maria at the dining area.

MARIA

Here’s a warm water for you. Eat these Panadol.

LARA

I guess maybe you need to know something… Abah passed away a few weeks ago. Before Ramadhan. He had cancer. Wan is at home with us for the moment.

MARIA

(stares into the distance)

 I remember he used to smoke a lot… Well he finally got it huh.

LARA

Before we get further into the conversation, I just want to say that I came here to find you because of Abah. If you don’t like me that’s okay because I probably don’t like you too.

MARIA

Why would you do anything for that man? He wasn’t even a good father.

LARA

(angry)

Excuse me? Where were YOU when he was a single father raising two girls on his own? Who had to become both the father and the mother? And guess who had to become a mother-figure taking care of her little sister? Me. And yes you still have another child who is 15 this year. Just in case you forgot since you’re currently ‘raising an empire’ instead of your own children.

MARIA

There’s a reason why I said what I said.

LARA

What? Tell me?

MARIA

I can’t…

Lara takes her car keys out of her pocket.

LARA

Well then, I can’t stay any longer. I have a little sister and a grandmother to take care of. Thanks for the meds and clothes. Your husband is probably nicer than you. Assalamualaikum.

MARIA

Wait… what did you say? My husband?

Lara shuts the door and goes out of the house.

CUT TO:

19.          INT. MARIA’S OFFICE. MORNING.

Maria is focusing on her workloads on top of her table. She’s looking into her laptop screen and is busy typing until her secretary comes into the room asking for her to sign a document. The secretary then leaves the room.

MARIA

(stares into the distance)

INSERT: FLASHBACKS OF SCENE 18 WHERE LARA CAME INTO HER HOUSE

Maria then reaches her phone and dials a number. The phone rings before Wan picks it up.

MARIA

Assalammualaikum, Mak…

CUT TO:

20.          INT. LIVING ROOM. EVENING.

Maria visits Wan and her daughters at their house. She offers the daughters to live with her in the villa. Tiara agrees to follow her but not Lara.

MARIA

Saya harap Mak tak kisah saya mengajak diorang tinggal dengan saya ni.

WAN

Eh, apa pula kamu cakap begitu. Mak ok saja. Lagipun, kamu tu kan mama diorang.. eloklah juga kalau diorang pun tinggal dengan kamu.

MARIA

(smiles)

Terima kasih, Mak. Terima kasih sebab masih memahami.

WAN

Sudahlah Maria… kita ni dah tua. Buat apa nak kenangkan kisah lalu… yang lalu biarkan berlalu.

MARIA smiles.

MARIA

So, Lara and Tiara, tinggal dengan mama ye lepasni? Sekali sekala kita balik jenguk Wan juga.

LARA

Nah, I’ll pass. Thank you so much for the offer.

TIARA

I’m in. Tiara nak ikut mama.

LARA

(shocks)

What?? Adik, seriously??

WAN

Biarkan jelah, Lara… Kalau Lara taknak ikut mama, takpe tinggal jelah dengan Wan… Nanti Tiara boleh je balik sini bila-bila dia nak. Okay?

MARIA

A’ah, betul tu. Lara, you sure tak nak ikut mama?

LARA rolls her eyes and stomps off leaving the living hall.

LARA

Tak faham bahasa ke? I said I’m not following you.

WAN

(sigh)

Biarkan jelah dia, Mari… darah muda memang macam tu…

MARIA

Saya faham, mak. Tiara bolehlah packing baju-baju dulu ye.

TIARA

Okay, mama.

Tiara goes upstairs to pack her things up. Then she goes down together with her sister, Lara. Lara and Wan bid farewell to both Maria and Tiara outside the house. Tiara and Maria leaves together with Maria’s fancy car.

CUT TO:

21.          EXT. MARIA’S HOUSE. EVENING.

Maria arrives together with Tiara at her villa. Tiara is amazed by the view and the hugeness of the villa. She wanders around the house garden, and Maria is amused to see her daughter’s reaction.

TIARA

(in awe)

WOW! Tell me that you actually don’t live in this place alone.

MARIA

(chuckles)

There’s Mak Kiah, Kak Tini, and Pak Amad. Diorang temankan mama bila Uncle Ray kena fly.

TIARA

(confused)

Uncle Ray? Who is that?

Maria invites Tiara to go inside the house and asks her driver to bring in the bags too.

MARIA

Come, let’s go inside first. We’ll talk more. Man, nanti hantarkan beg tu ke dalam ye!

CUT TO:

22.          INT. MARIA’S LIVING HALL. EVENING.

TIARA

(amazed)

WOW! Such a beautiful house. I must say, you really have a good taste, ma!

MARIA

(proud)

Thank you, my dear. It was actually Uncle Raymond who designed the house.

TIARA

Hah, that guy. Uncle Ray. Who is he?

Mak Kiah comes in to serve them iced tea. Maria takes the chance to introduce Tiara to Mak Kiah.

MARIA

Terima kasih, Mak Kiah. Oh, kenalkan Mak Kiah, ini anak saya, Tiara Qistina.

Tiara shakes and kiss Mak Kiah’s hand.

TIARA

Apa khabar, Mak Kiah? Panggil saya Tiara je.

MAK KIAH

(smiles)

Sihat alhamdulillah, nak… Amboi, cantik manis orangnya sama macam mama dia.

Mak Kiah gives a side glance to Maria. Maria smiles proudly. Then, Mak Kiah asked permission to leave the room.

MAK KIAH

Eh, Mak Kiah ke dapur dulu la ye. Puan borak-boraklah dulu dengan Tiara. Tiara kalau ada apa-apa, panggil aje Mak Kiah atau Kak Tini ye.

MARIA

Terima kasih ye Mak Kiah buat airnya.

Mak Kiah makes an “OK” hand gesture. Tiara sips the drink.

TIARA

Ahh, sedapnya teh ais ni!!

MARIA

Elok-elok minum tu, Tiara… jangan gelojoh nanti tersedak susah pula.

TIARA

Hah, tell me. Who is Uncle Ray?

MARIA
He’s my husband. Your step-father. I met him back then when I was still in airlines industry.

TIARA

Oh, wow! How long have you been married? Kenapa tak pernah kenalkan sebelum ni dengan kitorang?

MARIA

Kami kahwin dah nak dekat 1He’s a pilot. Schedule dia tak macam kita. Kejap kena ke sana, kejap ke sini, kadang tak balik seminggu.. mana ada peluang Mama nak bawa dia jumpa kamu semua.

TIARA

Oh..pilot rupanya. Patutlah. Wan tau ke pasal ni? Arwah abah…?

MARIA

(pauses)

Tahu. Wan tahu… abah kamu pun tahu.

Tiara nods her head happily.

MARIA
(cont)

Nanti ada kesempatan, mama kenalkan Uncle Ray dgn kamu ye. Sekarang ni pun dia kena fly ke Dubai.

TIARA

Alright, sure! Congratulations, mama.

MARIA
(happy)

Thank you, sweetheart.

CUT TO:

23.          EXT. MARIA’S HOUSE. MORNING.

Maria is rushing to go out with her luggage bag. She has to catch up a meeting this afternoon outside of the state. She leaves a memo for Tiara inside the house. Maria also leave some advice to Mak Kiah to guards the house and takes care of Tiara.  Mak Kiah bids goodbye to Maria as she leaves with the car.

CUT TO:

24.          INT. MARIA’S LIVING ROOM. AFTERNOON.

Tiara is laying on the sofa while watching the TV. She’s been pressing her stomach since this morning.

TIARA

(ill)

Aduh,sakitnyaa perut ni… kenapa sakit ni..haih

CUT TO:

25.          INT. MARIA’S HOUSE. NIGHT.

INSERT: 3 DAYS LATER

MARIA rushes to the door as she heard the doorbell rings. She leaves TIARA alone in her room after giving her some medicines.

MARIA

Siapa pula yang datang waktu macam ni?

MARIA glimpses at the wall clock. It shows 10PM. The doorbell rings even more. KAK TINI, a 25 year-old lady, the house maid, rushes to the front door.

KAK TINI

(shouts)

Sekejap, sekejap!

Kak Tini opens the door without hesitating. Maria also rushes down through the stairs. The door opens and Maria is surprise by the presence of her first-born at the door step.

MARIA

Oh… it’s you. Masuklah…

Lara goes inside the house to find her baby sister, Tiara.

LARA

(breathy)

MANA ADIK?? MANA TIARA??

Kak Tini tries to calms Lara but Maria instruct her to go to the kitchen. MARIA then tries to holds Lara’s hand but she pulls her hand away quickly. Lara does not want her mother to touch her.

MARIA

She’s in the bedroom. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, LARA?? Where is your manner? Tak reti nak bagi salam dulu sebelum masuk rumah orang?

LARA

(furious)

KAU, APA KAU DAH BUAT DENGAN ADIK AKU SAMPAI DIA SAKIT? SELAMA NI AKU JAGA DIA ELOK JE TAU!! AKU NAK BAWAK BALIK TIARA! DIA TAK PATUT TINGGAL DEKAT DALAM RUMAH NI!

MARIA is surprised when LARA scolds her. MARIA tries to keep calm as she does not want to add more oil into the fire burning on the dance floor.

MARIA

(sighs)

Please, have a seat first. I’ll go upstairs and bring her down.

LARA

Its fine, I’ll just wait here.

MARIA

As you wish, my dear…

Lara rolls her eyes. She stands steadily at the front door. Maria walks up the stairs while looking at Lara sadly. Maria knows the reason why Lara is here tonight.

CUT TO:

26.          INT. MARIA’S HOUSE. NIGHT.

Maria and Tiara walk down the stairs together. Maria looks at Lara sitting down in front of the door. She approaches Lara.

MARIA

Bangunlah, mari duduk dekat sana.

TIARA hugs LARA and helps her walk to the sofa. MARIA walks behind both of them.

CUT TO:

27.          INT. MARIA’S LIVING HALL. NIGHT.

Kak Tini leaves the living hall after serving the drinks. The environment in the hall are quiet and intense. MARIA breaks the silence…

     MARIA

How is your work, LARA?

LARA

(annoyed)

Don’t bother to know. It’s none of your business anyway.

TIARA

Kakak, don’t say like that…

LARA

You, keep quiet, TIARA. Look what she’s done to you!

MARIA

Okay, okay. Stop it, LARA. I was only asking. Why is it so hard for you to talk to me nicely? And Tiara’s condition is not that bad. She only had mild fever.

Lara is speechless. Silence fills the room once again. Only the sounds of tea sipping and air-conditioner fills the atmosphere.

MARIA
(sighs)

Your father was a wild and reckless boy when I met him. We went to the same college but he was my senior. He was pretty famous around girls back then except for me. I never knew his name. Until one night…,

TIARA

(excited)

What? What night?!!

LARA
Shh! TIARA, senyaplah.

MARIA

It was a dancing night where every year is compulsory for every faculty to do an event for their students, you may think it’s just the same like prom night. My whole life changed after that night.

MARIA looks deeply into her children’s eyes before continuing her story.

MARIA
That night, Khalid proposed me to be his girlfriend. It turns out it was him the whole time where I received those flowers, cards, and gifts from a mysterious sender. I turned him down by the way.

TIARA

WHAT??!!

LARA glares at her baby sister.

TIARA

Oops sorry…

MARIA

But your father didn’t stop there. He continued his effort day by day, month by month, year by year until he graduated. I thought he was going to stop there but I was wrong. He still waits for me even when he’s already working. So, I finally said yes during my graduation. My life turned out very well for few years ahead. We got married later on. Then, I gave birth to you.

MARIA stares at LARA. There is sorrow in her eyes.

MARIA

(pauses)

Khalid was a very successful businessman while I pursued my career as a cabin crew. I tried my best to adjust my schedule as a mother and also a career woman. We were still happy at that moment. Then, TIARA was born into the world.

MARIA smiles while looking at TIARA.

MARIA

(high-pitched voice)

And that’s when Khalid was at the peak of his career, so, he became busy that he didn’t even bother to ask me if I already had my lunch or dinner. He couldn’t be bothered if I was sick. All he thinks about was money, money, and money!!! And he even got balls to ask me to quit from work. All my life, all I ever wanted was to be a good daughter for my parents, a great leader for my team, and a good wife for him. BUT WHAT DID I GET IN RETURN? HE SEE ME AS A LAZY-ASS WOMAN WHO CAN’T EVEN TAKES CARE OF HER DAUGHTERS AND TOO BUSY TO THINK OF HOUSEHOLDS BECAUSE OF WORK AND NEVER MAKES HIM HAPPY SO HE DECIDED TO HAVE A MISTRESS!!

Silence fills the air once again. LARA and TIARA are in awe.

LARA

(speaks in a wobbly voice)

No…no…, kau tipu. Ayah takkan buat macam tu. No, never…!

MARIA

Say what you want. He’s dead anyway.

TIARA

MAMA!!

Lara stands up and faces MARIA. She’s holding back her tears as well as her rage inside.

LARA

Kalau kau benci sangat dengan ayah sekalipun, jangan pernah burukkan dia. Macamlah kau yang selama ni suapkan kami nasi!!!

Lara pulls Tiara’s hand and rushes to go out from the house, leaving Maria alone.

CUT TO:

28.         INT. LARA’S CAR. NIGHT.

INSERT SFX: SUMPAH BY NAIM DANIEL (2:00-2:50)

Lara presses the pedal as hard as she could. Her eyes are glued to the road but she still scolds her baby sister.

LARA

Tiara lepasni jangan gatal-gatal nak jumpa perempuan tu lagi. Kakak haramkan! If I find out you pergi jumpa atau tinggal dalam rumah perempuan tu lagi lepasni, siap kau!

TIARA nods her head.

LARA

Kau faham tak aku cakap ni?!

TIARA

Ye, faham…

29.          INT. MARIA’S BEDROOM. NIGHT.

INSERT SFX: SUMPAH BY NAIM DANIEL (3:00-3:41)

MARIA is crying in the bed while looking at old photo of LARA and TIARA when they were kids. Then she hugs the photo and falls asleep.

MARIA

(monologue)

Mama tak pernah sekali pun lupakan Lara dan Tiara. Tapi sikap abah kamu tu takkan pernah mama maafkan.

CUT TO:

30.          INT. COFFEE SHOP. MORNING

Lara is busy mopping the floor in the café while her colleagues are arranging the tables and chairs. She needs to work for full time today, from store opening until store closing. As she done mops the floor, she goes right away to serve the customers. During her break time, she can’t stop thinking about the incident last night.

LARA

(monologue)

Betul ke Abah macam tu..? Kalau betul, tergamaknya Abah buat Mama macam tu. Tapi, Mama pun salah. Kenapa dia sanggup tinggalkan aku dan TIARA masa kecik? Hmm…

Her phone rings while she’s staring into the distance going deep into her thoughts.

INSERT TEXT: WAN TERCINTA

Lara picks up the phone.

LARA

Ye, assalammualaikum Wan. Kenapa ni Wan?

WAN

(v/o)

Waalaikummussalam, Lara…. (pauses)

LARA

(anxious)

Ye Wan, kenapa ni? Kenapa Wan senyap??

WAN

(v/o)

Lara, Wan dekat hospital ni, adik kamu kena buang appendix. Dia kena operate..

LARA

(shocked)

APA?!! MACAM MANA ADIK BOLEH KENA APPENDIX NI??? Wan tunggu kejap.. Lara datang hospital sekarang juga.

CUT TO:

31.         INT. HOSPITAL ROOM. EVENING.

Lara bursts into the room once she gets there. Her sister is on the bed talking with her grandmother on the side. Both of them are surprise to see her bursting into the room.

WAN

Dah kenapanya main tujah masuk je ni Lara oii.. cuba bagi salam dulu lain kali. Terkejut tau Wan, mujur takde sakit jantung.

Lara rushes to her sister.

LARA

Adik, macam mana boleh kena macam ni? Doktor cakap apa? Bila nak kena operate? Alahai dik…

TIARA

(sad)

Adik minta maaf, kakak. Adik dah susahkan kakak dan juga Wan.

Lara hugs her baby sister.

LARA

(sigh)

Haih..takpelah adik. Everything’s going to be alright. Don’t worry.

CUT TO:

32.          INT. HOSPITAL LOBBY. EVENING.

LARA and WAN is waiting at the seating chair. They waits for their turn to take TIARA’s medicines and bills.

LARA

Ini semua salah perempuan tu, Wan! Kalau dia tak tinggalkan adik sorang-sorang dalam rumah tu haritu, adik takkan kena macam ni!

WAN

Tak baik kamu cakap macam tu, Lara… Perempuan tu adalah ibu kamu. Mama kamu berdua. Buruk baik dia macam mana sekalipun, dia yang kandungkan kamu 9 bulan tau!

LARA

Tapi, Wan..

Their conversations are interrupted when she heard the nurse calling her sister’s name. Lara gets up and walks to the counter. She takes the bill and the medicines. Then, she walks towards her grandmother with a long face.

WAN

Kenapa muka tu…? Kenapa tu, Lara?

LARA
(sad)

Macam mana ni Wan…. Macam mana kita nak bayar medical bill adik ni?

Wan takes the bill from Lara’s hand.

WAN

(shocks)

Subhanallah…

LARA

Takpe, Wan. Lara akan tanggung bil adik ni. Wan jangan risau.

WAN

Mana kamu nak cekau duitnya Lara oi..? Kamu tu mana ada duit!

LARA

Duit boleh dicari, Wan…

Wan shakes her head.

WAN

Jomlah balik dulu. Nanti malam kamu hantar Wan semula ke sini ye.

LARA stares into the space.

WAN

Lara… jangan dimenungkan sangat. Udahlah, jom kita balik. Nanti Wan takde malam ni, kamu tolong kemaskan sikit bilik abah kamu tu ye.

LARA

Baiklah, Wan…

CUT TO:

33.          INT. KHALID’S ROOM. NIGHT.

LARA enters her father’s room after dinner. She push the door slowly, looks around the room, smells it, and slowly walks into the room. She picks up the photo frame beside at the bed corner.

LARA

(sad)

Lara minta maaf sebab tak dapat jadi kakak yang baik untuk Tiara, bah… Lara janji akan berusaha sendiri untuk tanggung bil hospital adik.

Then she starts to change the bed sheets, wipes the book rack, and sweeps the floor, and others until she finds an old journal under Khalid’s bed.

LARA

Eh, bila masa buku ni ada kat sini? Buku apa ni?

LARA opens the journal. She is surprise to see the content. She finds old photos of her parents during their early marriage and college life. Then, she finds an envelope written “FOR MARIA”. She can’t help not to opens it so when she opens the envelope, there is a letter. She starts to read it.

KHALID

(v/o)

Ke hadapan Maria Zaharah,

Sesungguhnya dari awal hingga akhir akan aku terus meminta keampunan dari kau, Maria. Aku sedar akan kekhilafanku…

FADE INTO BLACK

CUT TO:

34.          INT. DINING ROOM. MORNING.

LARA is having breakfast with Wan. Wan is serving Lara with fried rice and a cup of hot coffee. Lara needs to go to do her extra part-time job. Before she goes for her work, she puts the envelope that she found in Khalid’s room on the table to shows to her grandmother.

LARA

Wan tau kan pasal ni?

WAN

(shocked)

Sudahlah, Lara. Lupakan aje. Itu kisah lama antara mak ayah kamu.

WAN refuses to open her mouth and tell the truth. Lara finishes her drink and gets up from the chair to go to work, leaving her grandmother alone at the dining table.

LARA

Okaylah, Wan. Lara macam dah nak kena pergi je ni. Nak bertekak dengan Wan pagi-pagi ni pun tak ada guna. Kalau adik meragam ke apa ke, Wan call je la nanti! Lara pergi dulu. Assalammualaikum.

WAN

(sad)

Waalaikummussalam..

35.          INT. LIVING ROOM. AFTERNOON.

INSERT: A WEEK LATER

Wan and Lara are watching TV together. Sometimes Lara is busy replying to her boyfriend’s text messages.

WAN

Kalau orang bercinta, memang telefon tu kena 24 jam je melekat kat tangan ye..?

LARA

(giggles)

Hahaha, memandai je Wan ni… ada Wan nampak Lara selalu pegang phone ke? Tak, kan? Hehehe

Wan shakes her head.

LARA
Ermm, Wan. Tiara dah pun selamat operation, nanti bila adik dah nak kena discharge, kita pergi sambut sama-sama ye?

WAN

Iyelah, Lara.. Kita pergi sama-sama ambik adik kamu tu ye.

Suddenly a car’s honk can be heard from the outside. Both Wan and Lara gets their heads out to see who’s outside the house.

WAN

Siapa pula tu datang waktu macam ni..? Cuba Lara bukakkan pint utu. Tengok kot-kot anak raja ke yang datang masuk minang.

LARA

Hish, Wan ni. Nak masuk minang sapa?

WAN

Masuk minang Wan la…hehehe

LARA

(giggles)

Hahahaha Wan ni ada-ada jelah.

Lara goes to the front door. She already heard someone giving salaam from the outside. The voice is so familiar to her. When she opens, she is surprised to see her mother with her sister standing outside of the house.

LARA

Adik…

CUT TO:

36.          INT. LIVING ROOM. AFTERNOON.

Everyone’s gather at the sofa. The environment is quite tense. Lara looks like she’s about to burst out of rage. Wan is sitting calmly at the edge. Tiara sits beside her mother, Maria while facing Lara.

MARIA

Saya Cuma niat nak melawat Tiara saja tadi. Tau-tau doctor kata dah boleh discharge. Tu yang saya bawak dia balik ni, Mak.

WAN

Tak mengap…, terima kasihlah Maria. Kamu tak kerja pula hari ni?

MARIA

Saya memang ambil cuti untuk melawat Tiara hari ni.

LARA
(annoyed)

Ceh, anak dah nak mati baru nak cuti.

WAN

Lara, tak baik cakap macamtu!

LARA

Yelah, semua Lara buat semua salah. Kalau perempuan ni, semua betul dan elok depan Wan.

WAN

LARA KATRINA!

MARIA

LARA, TAK BAIK CAKAP DENGAN WAN MACAM TU!

LARA

Eh, kau diam jelah. Jangan ingat aku tak tau yang kau sengaja bayar bil hospital adik ni semua sebab kau nak kami terhutang budi dengan kau. Kan??

WAN

(shouts)

Lara!! Kenapa kamu macam ni?? Tak takut dosa ke?

LARA

Ini bukan soal dosa pahala, Wan. Lara tak tau la sampai bila Wan pun nak bersubahat diamkan rahsia arwah abah,semua.

WAN

Rahsia apanya? Apa kamu merepek ni Lara?

LARA

Lara dah jumpa journal abah. Lara dah baca semuanya termasuk surat untuk mama tu sekali.

MARIA

Surat? Surat apa ni?

Lara puts down the envelope that she found in her father’s room that night. Then, she stomps to her room upstairs. She’s crying so hard because she couldn’t accept the truth. She feels cheated with her own family.

LARA

Take this, read it by yourself! I don’t know whats going to happen anymore! I don’t wanna care anymore!!!!

Wan calls out her name but Tiara cuts it off. Meanwhile, Maria is reading the letter and she starts to tear up.

WAN

Lara, Lara!! Nak kemana tu?!

TIARA

Biarlah kakak tu Wan. Kita bagi je dia masa. Nanti kita pujuk dia…

CUT TO:

37.          INT. MARIA’S HOUSE. MORNING.

INSERT: TAKBIR RAYA.

Lara is busy finishing her makeup. She looks herself in the mirror. She likes the dress that she’s wearing. Then she goes down as Wan starts to calls out her name few times already. When she’s approaching the dining room, she can see Wan and Uncle Ray is already sitting at the dining table while Tiara and Maria is busy serving the raya dishes.

MARIA
Wow, cantiknya anak mama.

TIARA

You look stunning, kakak!

WAN

Bergaya betul cucu Wan ni ye..teringat Wan masa muda dulu-dulu. Samalah macam kamu ni!!

Lara blushed from all the compliments.

LARA
Hehe, terima kasih atas pujian tu semua. Selamat Hari Raya.

They starts to eat the dishes together. Lara is seems to eat while replying to her boyfriend’s text messages. Wan glares at her.

WAN

Hamboii senyum sampai ke telinga kalua boypren yang mesej yeeee.

MARIA

Ha, jemputlah kawan Lara tu beraya ke rumah mama nanti. Teringin juga mama jumpa dengannya.

TIARA

(chuckles)

Takde maknanya kakak nak tayang boyfriend dia tu… secretive la kononnya.

LARA

Hish, Tiara. Mana ada macam tu. Ermm, mama… nantilah bila Lara dah ready, Lara bawak dia jumpa Mama dan semua. Heee.

Maria nods her head.

38.          INT. MARIA’S LIVING ROOM. MORNING.

Lara, Tiara, Wan, Raymond, Maria are taking photos together for Raya. They are all in traditional Malay clothes. Maria hires a photographer to come to her house for taking the photos.

PHOTOGRAPHER

(background voice)

Ok pose, one, two, three, smile!

INSERT: CAMERA SHUTTER SOUND

LARA

(v/o)

Siapa sangka aku akhirnya dapat beraya bersama orang yang melahirkan aku dan Tiara. Walaupun dibesarkan tanpa kasih-sayangnya, tapi syawal kali ini, segalanya berubah. Syawal kali ini juga telah merubahkan aku untuk melupakan semua kenangan pahit yang telah berlalu. Bak kata pepatah, yang elok dijadikan teladan, yang buruk dijadikan sempadan. Aku menjadi lebih dewasa dalam liku kehidupanku. Aku percaya setiap ketentuan Tuhan itu pasti ada hikmah di sebaliknya. Selamat Hari Raya Maaf Zahir dan Batin untuk semua. Yang ikhlas, Lara Katrina.
