TV3’s series— Cinderella (1998) and Sindarela (2008).
A little background about these two TV series, the former one was a hit back then in the end of 90s as it catches everyone’s heart with the sweet chemistry of both main characters Ahmad Idham and Haliza Misbun together with their opening and closing song of the series by singer Haslinda. Meanwhile, the latter was a series included in the Lestary slot for the TV station. It was played by Sharifah Amani, Bront Palarae and Remy Ishak.
The three approaches analysed from both series are aesthetic approaches, ritual approaches, and ideological approaches.
1.Aesthetic approaches
To compare, both drama series had the same major theme which is fusion of drama and romance although the latter had a little bit of fantasy. However, the plot may be a bit differ as Cinderella had a plot of the main character searching for her long lost family and got married due to her stepfather accusations. Meanwhile, Sindarela was about a princess with a boyish character named Zoela or called Zoey. Her story of her life revolved around two different guys named Hussein and Haidar and both were called Sein and Dar. Together, their journey started with a little bit of drama along the series.
2. Ritual approaches
The Cinderella (1998) series was focused on major themes of drama and romance, this series showed the settings and action of love as well as several conflict scenes included. For example in Cinderella (1998), the main characters were madly in love so there were skinships and issues resolved after a conflict was shown throughout the series. Meanwhile, for Sindarela (2008), the same was applied, the skinships were also involved but probably lesser than the former. Since Sindarela also was claimed to have a bit of fantasy theme, the appearance of Zoey as a gothic and boyish Princess which totally out of anyone’s imagination as we were always constructed or made believe that Princesses are always graceful and sophisticated.
3. Ideological approaches
Cinderella (1998) is labelled as idealised gemeinschaft or traditional communities where they appeared to have more values of hard work. This can be seen when the character of Salman (Ahmad Idham), strived for his business and same goes to Cinderella’s (Haliza Misbun) mother, Cik Suria whereby she tried to save her position as the larger shareholder in the company. As for Sindarela (2008), the sophisticated gesellschaft or modern culture were shown as the plots and the settings of the place were mainly in urbanized areas such as the place where Zoey and her friends studied and also more advanced gadgets.
