Auteur or Schemateur: Tan Sri Jins Shamsudin

I grew up watching the late P Ramlee’s movies.
Tan Sri Jins Shamsudin had first caught my eyes through his acting as the
antagonist in Sergeant Hassan together with P Ramlee.
So, I’ve watched several films directed by him
and I have tried to break down several elements from the Auteur Theory. In most
of his films, I noticed that he always had the same theme such as family bond,
love, and sacrifices. For example, in his early creations like his first
“newborn”— Bukan Salah Ibu Mengandong (1969).
He also always instilled a character with
disability such as a character with blindness, broken-legged, cancer patient,
emotional-pain, and few more. Although
those characters have disabilities, I think he successfully made a big impact
out of all those characters.
Talking about mise-en-scene in his works, it
probably seems more noticeable in his films after the year 1970s because they
were in colors. Every scene was memorable. He knows how to tackle the audience
especially during the emotional scenes. He also had aesthetic styles such as
fancy motorcars displayed in his works.
His usual collaborators for his films are
Sarimah Ahmad and Noorkumalasari for the roles. Ahmad Nawab for the official
soundtracks, and Aimi Jarr for the script. Few of his films also were produced
by the same production, PERFIRMA.
